How to Negotiate Your Salary: Scripts and Strategies

Most Indians never negotiate their first salary — and it costs them crores over a lifetime. Every raise, bonus, and future job offer is typically based on a percentage increase from your previous salary. A lower starting point compounds into massive lost earnings over decades. Negotiating isn't greedy or ungrateful — it's professional and expected. Here's exactly how to do it.

Research your market value before a single word

Never pull a number from the air. Use platforms like Glassdoor, AmbitionBox, Levels.fyi, and LinkedIn Salary Insights. Talk to seniors in your industry — ask directly what someone with your experience should expect. Factor in location, company size, and your specific skill set. Know three numbers before entering any negotiation: the industry average, your ideal target, and your walk-away minimum.

Let them reveal their number first

When asked "What are your salary expectations?", avoid giving a number immediately. Use this script: "I'd love to understand the budget you've allocated for this role, and then we can discuss if my expectations align." If they push, give a wide but honest range: "Based on my research and experience, I'm considering roles in the ₹12–18 lakh range, but I'm flexible for the right opportunity." Getting their number first gives you negotiation leverage.

Negotiate the full package, not just base salary

If the base salary is non-negotiable, negotiate everything else: joining bonus, performance bonus structure, stock options or ESOPs, flexible work arrangements, additional leave, professional development budget, faster performance review cycle. These benefits add significant value. A company that can't move ₹50,000 on salary might easily approve a ₹1 lakh joining bonus.

Use silence strategically

When you receive an offer, don't respond immediately — even if it's great. Say: "Thank you so much for the offer. I'm excited about the role. I'd like to review the complete package and get back to you by tomorrow morning. Does that work?" This 24-hour pause signals you're thoughtful and have options. During the actual negotiation, after stating your counter, stop talking. The awkward silence that follows is your greatest weapon. Humans rush to fill silence — let the recruiter fill it, often with a concession.

Email script when negotiating in writing

Use this framework: State appreciation → Reference your value → Make your ask clearly → Reiterate enthusiasm. Example: "Thank you for the offer. I'm very excited about joining the team. Given my 5 years of experience directly aligned with this role, I was expecting compensation closer to ₹15 LPA. Is there flexibility to adjust the offer in that direction? I'm eager to sign and get started." Professional, warm, direct, and non-confrontational.

Negotiation is a conversation, not a conflict. The worst they can say is no. The best they can say is yes. Either way, you've practiced a skill that will earn you lakhs more over your career. Never accept the first offer.
