How to Start a Small Business from Scratch in India

Starting a business is both exciting and terrifying. You have an idea, but where do you actually begin? From legal registrations to finding your first customer, here's a step-by-step guide to launching your small business in India without losing your mind — or your savings.

Validate your idea first

Before spending a single rupee, talk to potential customers. Ask them about their problems, not your solution. Would they pay for what you're offering? How much? A simple Google Form survey or 10 honest conversations can save you months of building something nobody wants.

Choose your business structure

In India, most small businesses start as a Sole Proprietorship — simplest to set up with minimal compliance. As you grow, you can consider an LLP (Limited Liability Partnership) or a Private Limited Company. Register on the Udyam portal to get an MSME certificate, which unlocks government benefits and easier loans.

Handle the legal basics

You'll need a GST registration if your turnover crosses ₹20 lakhs (₹10 lakhs for some states). Open a separate business bank account — mixing personal and business finances is a nightmare during tax season. If you have a brand name, trademark it early.

Build a minimum viable product (MVP)

Don't wait for perfection. Launch with the simplest version of your product that solves the core problem. A WhatsApp catalogue and Google Pay work fine as your first "store." Upgrade only when you have paying customers and feedback.

Find your first customers

Your network is your net worth initially. Tell everyone you know. Offer your service for free or at a heavy discount to 3–5 people in exchange for honest testimonials. Post consistently about your journey on LinkedIn and Instagram — people love rooting for a founder.

Entrepreneurship isn't about having all the answers. It's about starting before you feel ready and figuring things out along the way. Your small business could be one decision away.
