Skincare Routine for Beginners: The Only 3 Products You Need

Scroll through Instagram and it seems like everyone has a 12-step skincare routine with products that cost more than your rent. The truth? Great skin doesn't require a cabinet full of serums. Here's the simplest, science-backed routine for healthy skin.

Understand your skin type

Your routine depends entirely on your skin type. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, wait 30 minutes without applying anything, then observe. Does it feel tight? You're likely dry. Shiny? Oily. T-zone shiny but cheeks normal? Combination. Knowing this prevents you from buying products that work against your skin.

Product 1: Cleanser

A gentle, pH-balanced cleanser is non-negotiable. Wash twice a day — morning and night. If you wear makeup or sunscreen (you should), double-cleanse in the evening: an oil-based cleanser first, followed by your regular cleanser. Drugstore brands like Cetaphil and Simple work beautifully.

Product 2: Moisturiser

Even oily skin needs moisture — skipping moisturiser can actually make your skin produce more oil to compensate. Choose gel-based for oily skin, cream-based for dry skin. Apply on slightly damp skin to lock in hydration.

Product 3: Sunscreen (Most Important)

Ask any dermatologist: sunscreen is the single best anti-ageing product you can use. UV rays cause wrinkles, dark spots, and skin cancer. Use at least SPF 30, broad-spectrum, every single day — even indoors, even when it's cloudy. Reapply every 3 hours if you're outside. Indian pharmacy sunscreens like UV Doux and Blynds are excellent and affordable.

The order that matters

Morning: Cleanser → Moisturiser → Sunscreen. Night: Cleanser → Moisturiser. That's it. Once this habit is solid, you can consider adding a vitamin C serum (morning) or retinol (night) — but master the basics first.

Good skincare isn't complicated. It's consistent. Start with these three products, and your future self will thank you.
